Language Matters - guide for AOD workers

AOD

Developed by the Network of Alcohol and other Drugs Agencies (NADA) and the NSW Users and AIDS Association (NUAA) in Australia, Language Matters is a best-practice guide for non-government alcohol and other drug (AOD) workers. NADA is the peak body representing non-government AOD services in NSW, while NUAA is a peer-based organisation advocating for the health, rights, and dignity of people who use drugs.

This resource promotes non-stigmatising, person-centred language that empowers clients and challenges harmful stereotypes. As NADA CEO Dr Robert Stirling notes, even well-intentioned words can unintentionally reinforce stigma and become a barrier to support. Language Matters encourages all workers to reflect on how language shapes care, access, and outcomes.
