Alcohol and other drugs care charter
Reducing stigma is essential to improving the health and wellbeing of people who use, or have used, alcohol and other drugs. The Alcohol and Other Drugs Care Charter is a practical tool designed to help all staff—across any service—deliver care that is safe, accessible, equitable, and non-judgemental.
Co-designed in Australia by people with lived experience, clinicians, and key organisations—including the NSW Ministry of Health’s Centre for Alcohol and Other Drugs, NADA (the Network of Alcohol and other Drugs Agencies), NUAA (NSW Users and AIDS Association), and the ACI Alcohol and Other Drugs Network—the Charter outlines what respectful, stigma-free care looks like from the perspective of those receiving it.
It’s a call to action for health services, encouraging staff to reflect on their practice, change service culture and environments, and challenge structural stigma. Organisations are invited to become signatories and use the Charter to guide meaningful change.
