Language Matters: Conversations about alcohol and other drugs (video)

In this short film, the International Network on Health and Hepatitis in Substance Users (INHSU) explores how language can reduce stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs. INHSU is a global network of researchers, clinicians, community members, and policymakers working to improve the health of people who use drugs.

The film features:

  • Matthew Bonn, CATIE (Canada)

  • Louise Hansford, NHS (UK)

  • Annie Madden, INPUD (Australia + International)

Together, they show how everyday words and phrases can either reinforce stereotypes or create safer, more respectful spaces. The film also offers practical guidance and examples for health professionals, policymakers, and community workers on how to use language that empowers rather than harms.
