Is Drug Use Stigma Torture?
This webinar, hosted by the Australian Injecting and Illicit Drug Users League (AIVL), explores how the stigma faced by people who use drugs can amount to torture and a breach of human rights under international law.
Presented with Dr Sean Mulcahy (La Trobe University), Professor Kate Seear (Deakin University), and Professor Carla Treloar (University of New South Wales), the session covers:
The law against torture and stigma: Dr Mulcahy and Professor Seear unpack what international human rights law says about torture, cruel treatment, and degrading treatment. Using the coronial findings into the death of Veronica Nelson, they show how drug-related stigma can be seen as torture.
How to take action: Dr Mulcahy introduces a practical submission guide for individuals and organisations wanting to raise concerns with the United Nations Committee Against Torture.
Community discussion: Professor Treloar leads a Q&A session, responding to questions and reflections from the audience.
